Disqaulification?
I've just read Mark Richmond was disqualified from the Gold Cup singles, for "indulging in a soft drink" The report said he was 1-0 up, when his opponent, Mike Vietch, reported him & got him disqualified, is this correct?

Bearders- 07-16-2007

From what I have read on other forums this is indeed correct, Mark took out a 129 checkout to lead Mike Veitch 1-0, he then between legs took a sip of Diet Coke. This apparently is against the BDO rules and Mike refused to carry on until a official came, Mike Veitch was then asked whether he wanted to claim the game or start again, he chose to claim the game! You can read more on the BDO forums.

What an absolute debarcle. How are you not allowed to drink a SOFT drink whilst playing a game of darts. What if your in a 3 or 5 setter and each sets goes to 5 legs, you are supposed to go without a drink for 30 or 40 minutes, maybe longer, without a drink! All the forums are putting in the spotlight that Mike Veitch is a disgrace, he may well be, ok, he is, using a stupid rule to claim a game, but what is a pathetic ruling like this, doing in the game of darts. Is Michael Owen no longer allowed to take a slurp during a game or is Federer breaking the rules by drinking in between games? What a ludicrous rule, the BDO are nuts and I feel sorry for Mark to fall foul of this in his first big game. Could continue but would probably rabble on. Unlucky Mark, feel for you mate.

Whilst I wouldn't argue that this rule does seem a little silly, all the players have an obligation to make sure that they are fully conversant with all the rules of the competition they are playing in and clearly the "water only" rule applicable here wasn't adhered to and there can therefore be little argument unless the rules were not explained or made available for MR to view. That having been said, Veitch is clearly a complete and utter tw@t who was obviously more than a little concerned that Mr Richmond was going to beat him. Good to see he lost in the semis!

The BDO's current rule does not even permit the drinking of water during matches played 'on the floor' and this rule is not printed anywhere for players to read (as far as I'm aware). The announcement was made once, prior to the ladies starting their singles matches but after Marks disqualification it was announced numerous times and suddenly changed from being no drinking during a match to include no drinking during practice as well. If a rule can be changed during a tournament how is any player supposed to know what is permitted and what is not, let alone someone who is playing in their first ever tournament?

Next they'll be telling us "No drinking at any BDO qualifying event". Are the players allowed any alcohol when playing the World Professional at Lakeside? If so this makes a mockery of the whole system, darts goes hand in hand with drinking. Having said that, I'd be a lot wealthier if I hadn't discovered the delights of beer!! How many Pubs/Clubs would sponsor leagues or competitions (or even let them take place) if alcohol was not to be consumed. This needs sorting. _________________ If your knees bent the other way round, what shape would a chair have to be?

Next they'll be telling us "No drinking at any BDO qualifying event". I'm afraid that is already happening 'The Falconer'. I played in the Ladies World Pro Regional Play-offs at Hertfordshire's venue last season and we were not permitted to drink anything including water during our matches. I found it totally disgusting then, especially as one of our ladies was having Chemotherapy treatment at that particular time and needed to drink, and I still find it disgusting that a player cannot have a drink during a match 'on the floor'.

The Enemy- 08-05-2007

There been any more updates?

Dirty Wench- 08-05-2007

The BDO are reviewing the No Drinking Rule, what the outcome will be Lord only knows but I doubt very much that drinking during play in floor matches will be permitted. I'm sure your General Secretary will inform everyone in a little more depth at your next meeting and give any further information she has received from now until then.
